How it works. When the NightStar flashlight is gently shaken, a high-strength rare earth magnet passes smoothly through a wire coil, efficiently generating electrical energy. With only one moving part, the NightStar flashlight transforms simple motion into light. NightStar's heavy duty capacitor, which can be recharged repeatedly, stores the energy and delivers power to the new StarCore™ LED. View the NightStar design diagram > Economical & Eco-Friendly. Rechargeable batteries, such as NiCd, NiMH, and LiIon, can only be charged and discharged several hundred times before storage capacity begins to diminish. The capacitor in NightStar can be recharged several hundred thousand times. Batteries fail to work effectively in cold environments; capacitors do not suffer this problem. Batteries are also costly and considered a hazardous material. Batteries that depend on chemical reactions not only pose a danger to the environment but are also corrosive and can destroy a flashlight. One of the most unique and significant features of NightStar is that it will never need replacement parts or maintenance. The components within NightStar and their integrated design yield a product that can be relied upon to light the way anytime, anywhere. Built rugged. Because of its reliability and durability, NightStar is now used by military personnel around the world, including Air Force medics, Special Ops forces, and Coast Guard units. NightStar has proven reliability in extreme conditions around the world. There are no parts to burn out, break or replace, even when exposed to repeated impacts and extreme temperatures. NightStar’s state of the art components are contained within an extremely tough, waterproof housing ensuring operation even in the most severe conditions. The new StarCore™ LED is practically unbreakable and has a rated lifetime of tens of thousands of hours. NightStar’s magnetic on/off switch is reliable, watertight, and non-sparking. The rare earth magnets used in NightStar are made of neodymium, iron and boron. Their special material composition makes them the strongest grade magnets in the world.
